Prague, July 17 (CTK) - Top Czech tennis players Radek Stepanek, 31, and Nicole Vaidisova, 21, got married in the St Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle Saturday.
Vaidisova arrived at the castle in a luxurious white Rolls-Royce, Stepanek came in black limousine BMW. The two players have been partners for nearly three years. They are based in Florida at present. Stepanek said he and Vaidisova wanted to get married in Prague because the city was their home and they would like to live here. The wedding ceremony was attended by four dozens of guests, including legendary Czech hockey forward Jaromir Jagr (now Avantgard Omsk) and football goalkeeper Petr Cech (Chelsea). Vaidisova was the best woman in Czech tennis until recently in the past. Her best was the 7th position in world tennis according to WTA. She ended her professional career in the spring after playing a series of bad games. Stepanek is the second best Czech tennis player. The best current Czech player among men is Tomas Berdych (ATP - number 8). In spring when Stepanek was number 18 in world standings, he interrupted his career because he suffered from fatigue syndrome and he has recently been preparing to return to world tennis. Two years ago, Stepanek was the world's eighth player in ATP standings. Marriages of famous Czech athletes are nothing exceptional. The most legendary couple seems to be Emil Zatopek (long distance run) and Dana Zatopkova (javelin). World champion gymnast Vera Caslavska and middle distance runner Josef Odlozil got married during the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, closely watched by the world media then. Serena Williams, the world’s No. 1 ranked women’s tennis player, has pulled out of tournaments in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal after cutting her right foot on a broken glass while at a restaurant.
Williams, 28, was injured last week and will require surgery, the WTA Tour said on its website without giving details of the incident. “I’m so upset I won’t be able to play in the upcoming events,” Williams said in a statement. “Thank you for all of your support. I can’t wait to get back on the courts.” Williams, who two weeks ago collected her 13th major tournament title with a victory at Wimbledon, was set to play in the Istanbul Cup starting July 26. She’ll also miss WTA Tour events starting Aug. 9 and 16 in Cincinnati and Montreal, respectively. It isn’t clear how the injury will affect her preparation for the U.S. Open, the season’s final major championship, which is scheduled to begin Aug. 30 in Flushing Meadows, New York. 8. Maria Sharapova did more than just visit the site of the Chernobyl nuclear accident recently. She made a personal contribution of an impressive $250,000 to expand a UNDP-supported program that provides sports and physical activities for youth in the area affected by the disaster.
As a UNDP (United Nations Development Program) Goodwill Ambassador, she has also set up a charitable foundation to help fund a number of UNDP youth-focused projects. She supports no less than seven youth-oriented projects in areas of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine which were affected by the 1986 Chernobyl accident, which led to her parents fleeing the area and settling in Siberia. Maria also funds a five-year scholarship program for students coming from the contaminated regions. Although a report from the 2005 Chernobyl Forum found that the health-related effects of the disaster have cleared up, poverty and diseases related to alcohol, smoking, stress and poor diets remain serious threats to people living in the region. "I've seen progress and kids with a great potential to do even more," said Sharapova. "What they need is to work hard and believe in themselves. Having supported health and education initiatives, I am very happy to start contributing on sports and physical activities that promote healthy lifestyles."
