The Labor Day holiday weekend kicked off on Saturday with blue skies and a dynamite lineup at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Women's top seed Caroline Wozniacki continued to display fine form in a 6-1, 6-0, rout of Yung-Jan Chan. Maria Sharapova spoiled the hopes of American teenager Beatrice Capra, and easily advanced to the Round of 16. The big upset of the day, No. 4 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia was sent packing, falling to unheralded Kaia Kanepi in straight sets. In men's action, five-time US Open champion Roger Federer made quick work of Paul-Henri Mathieu and moved one step closer to a seventh consecutive finals' appearance. Following a scratchy start due to swirling winds, Mardy Fish rebounded and defeated Arnaud Clement in five hard-fought sets. Also advancing was No. 17 Gael Monfils who came out and wowed the Grandstand crowd with his speed and shot-making ability in a four-set victory over Janko Tipsarevic. The evening session opened with a men's match that saw No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic dispatch local favorite James Blake in straight sets. In the nightcap, former US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova cruised past fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.
