All players fought through record temperatures, and several top seeds also had to fight back against serious upset challenges on Day 2 of the 2010 US Open.
The upset bids began early in a sweltering Arthur Ashe Stadium where women's No. 4 Jelena Jankovic and No. 14 seed Maria Sharapova, as well as No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic fell behind early, but all battled back giving the fans 11 thrilling sets on Tuesday afternoon. Other seeds stretched to the limit, but surviving on Day 2 were No. 8 Fernando Verdasco, No. 19 American Mardy Fish, No. 31 David Nalbandian, and 2004 Women's Champion No. 11 Svetlana Kuznetsova. A few seeds were not so lucky to avoid first round upsets, as Arnaud Clement of France took out No. 16 seed Marcos Baghdatis and Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine ousted No. 8 seed Na Li of China. A showcase of the 2010 No. 1 seeds, Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki headlined Night 2 at the US Open. Nadal and Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili gave the fans quite a show, but in the end Rafa held on to advance in his quest to complete the career Grand Slam. Day 2 ended after midnight with Wozniacki, the 2009 finalist handling young American Chelsey Gullickson in straight sets.
