Frank Dancevic must be thinking he is cursed. Just weeks after returning to the tour after back surgery that had kept him away from the circuit since the US Open, the Canadian has received another setback. Playing Nick Lindahl in the second qualifying round in Atlanta, Dancevic ran into a scoreboard on match point and sustained an injury that required stitches. Dancevic lost the match 7-6 4-6 6-3.
"Frank was playing match point when he hit the board at full run," Canadian Davis Cup captain Martin Laurendeau told Montreal’s Rue Frontenac. "He couldn't see it because of his position and speed. He hit the corner very sharply, so the cut is a good 24 centimeters on his leg, up to the hip. The doctor said if Frank had gone a few centimeters closer and cut his muscle it would have been much more serious." Dancevic, who recently reached the Newport quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Mardy Fish, has withdrawn from Los Angeles and is uncertain whether he will be able to play in Washington.
