4. Increase Salt Content in Food and Drink – As salt is the major electrolyte lost in sweat, it is important to replace this important electrolyte throughout the day. Food that contains high salt contents are vegetable juice, canned soups, sports drinks, salted pretzels).
5. Use Ice and Other Cooling Mechanisms – Keeping the body cool before, during and after practice or competition is helpful in maintaining an appropriate body temperature. However, putting ice directly on muscles and joints during play is not advised due to the possibility of muscle and joint stiffening.

The series will be a lead-in to the upcoming 2011 BNP Paribas Showdown which will feature John McEnroe facing Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras taking on Andre Agassi at Madison Square Garden on February 28. Despite the original concept of the Battle of the Belgians being ditched after Justine Henin pull out injured, promoter Bob Verbeeck succeeded in his ambition of breaking the long standing attendance record set 37 years ago in the Battle of the Sexes match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
A crowd 35,681 packed into Brussel’s King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday night to watch reigning US Open champion Kim Clijsters defeat Henin’s substitute Serena Williams who successfully retained her Wimbledon title five days earlier. Clijsters triumphed over Williams 6-3, 6-2 but the score was largely irrelevant. What really mattered was the attendance record that surpassed the previous record of 30,472 set in 1973 at the Houston Astrodome when King faced off against Riggs. There was not quite the same opulent sense of excess as was seen all those years ago at Houston and neither player followed Billie Jean’s example of being carried onto court in the Cleopatra style by four bare-chested muscle men dressed in the garb of ancient slaves. However Martina Navratilova, winner of 18 major singles titles, acted as umpire. Williams played despite suffering from a foot injury she picked up during her arduous campaign at the All England Club that also saw her reach the quarterfinals of the Ladies Doubles alongside sister Venus . Henin was forced to withdraw after ironically injuring her elbow when facing Clijsters in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Before Wimbledon bowed to pressure from the WTA to give equal prize money they used as an excuse the fact that they had conducted a survey which concluded there was considerably less interest in women’s tennis. There was some evidence that is still the case as the famous Queue was much shorter for the latter stages of the women’s event this year than it was for the men. Having virtual unknowns in the line-up hardly helped.
Overall attendance was 489,946, which is the second highest overall for 13 days in spite of the reduced capacity of 37,500. All time highest of 511,043 was set in 2009 with daily capacity of 40,000. Attendance on Sunday July 4 was 32,036, a record for the final Sunday. Attendance of 41,920 on Friday 25 June was also a day record. And it appears the preference for the men even extends to the sale of Wimbledon towels! Figues show that 13,000 men’s towels were sold, and just 8,500 of the ladies. Other big-selling items included 18,000 mini tennis ball key rings, 8,000 twin-packs of wrist bands and 7,500 4-ball cans of tennis balls. Strawberry sales were up by 12 percent, to 31,360 kilos (nearly 70,000 lbs). On court, 54,250 balls were used during The Championships, 123 of them during The Match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. A new Wimbledon serve speed record was set by Taylor Dent at 148mph (238 kph), and most aces were served by John Isner (113 in one match), closely followed by finalist Tomas Berdych with 111 in seven matches. Champion Serena Williams set a new Wimbledon ladies record with 89. And, in case you were wondering, the last time there were no rain interruptions at The Championships was 1995. San Diego has been selected by the USTA to host the 2010 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final between the United States and Italy, taking place on November 6-7. The final will be played on an indoor hardcourt at San Diego Sports Arena, which has a capacity of nearly 9,000 and it will be a repeat of last year’s title decider, when Italy was crowned champion for the second time after defeating the United States 4-0 in Reggio Calabria.
Italy booked its place in the final with wins over Ukraine and Czech Republic, while the United States overcame former champions France and Russia. The semifinal victory over Russia was only sealed in the deciding doubles rubber. The last Fed Cup tie held in the San Diego area was in 2008, when the United States defeated Germany in the quarterfinals. The American team has never been beaten in California, having won all seven of their previous ties there. Throughout his lengthy career former world no.1 Lleyton Hewitt has been no stranger to his solicitor’s office with protracted legal battles with the ATP, his former agents Octagon and the odd spat with Tennis Australia. But the 29 year-old Aussie appears to have lost out in a law-suit over his trademark clenched fist and catch-cry of “C’mawaaaan!”
Lleyton Hewitt Marketing maintained Brisbane businessman John Sheils was using the player’s image for profit by creating a trademark that consisted of the words ‘Come on’ accompanied by a fist-pumping gesture. Sheils contested the action, maintaining he came up with the design six years ago in collaboration with his two daughters and intended it to be ‘representative of all Australian sports people’. Lleyton Hewitt Marketing was set up after the player left Octagon late in 2004. In February 2007 David Drysdale, Executive Director of Tennis Tasmania and a former Tennis Australia manager, was put in charge of the company. Earlier this year Hewitt's father Glynn, acting on behalf of Lleyton Hewitt Marketing, denied blocking financial deals which would have netted his famous son lucrative returns. Hewitt Sr.said a number of deals listed by Lleyton's former sports and financial management agency in a Supreme Court offered to guarantee only a portion of the tennis star's investment. In a protracted case, Octagon is suing Lleyton Hewitt for loss of merchandising and management fees through breach of an exclusive representation contract with them. Hewitt is counter-suing for "loss of proper return on investments held'' and negligence in Octagon's management of his finances. |
