While the majority of the tennis world is still astounded by the physical and mental powers of endurance shown by John Isner and Nicolas Mahut in last week’s record breaking marathon, sports scientists have been busy analyzing the performance and now see whole new barriers.
“Tennis, like boxing, is a much under-appreciated sport when it comes to endurance but these two players proved themselves to be superlative athletes and the aftereffects are frankly not going to be as bad as some people might think,” maintained Jamie Pringle, senior physiologist at the at the English Institute of Sport. “I don’t think such a thing would have been possible even 20 years ago but advancements in the knowledge of sporting nutrition and conditioning served Isner and Mahut well. “They were not really in any physical danger playing so long because they were constantly feeding and storing to the extent they were pre-empting for ten games or 45 minutes in advance. So no way would there have been metabolic damage or hypoglaecemia meaning they basically ran out of blood sugars to give the muscles fuel. “Modern day tennis players are durable. They can easily play three normal matches in one day, but recovery for any athlete from an encounter of that magnitude takes days and perhaps even weeks. Effectively any chance Isner might have had of going further in the competition was frankly minimal.” Isner’s mind as well as the body was effectively in submission. John F. Murray is a former touring tennis player who is now a leading sports psychologist who wrote the best selling ‘Smart Tennis, How to Play and Win the Mental Game’. “The most determinant factor in the match lasting so long and both players showing such powers of concentration was Wimbledon,” insisted Murray. “It is the most special and hallowed tournament and players realize they only have so many opportunities of playing there. “The more they got involved in the thing, the greater was the sense something very special was evolving. They could sense that from the growth of the crowd and the interest all around the court. Leading players and champions from the past were turning up to watch. No pro worth anything in that situation would not keep fighting. They were not going to give up and this subconsciously created a sense of almost super focus in both men’s mind. “There was a massive amount of hormones going into the brain and adrenalin flowing. Yes it was superhuman in effort and a great study into how strong the sportsman’s mind can be but the trained body and mind can achieve wondrous levels of endurance.” But now psychologist Murray’s major concern is for the loser. “For Mahut to hold serve 65 times in succession to stay in the match was a truly wonderful statistic but the aftermath of defeat could be very harmful. “For Isner it will just be a matter of wanting to get away from tennis for a week or so, do other things and recharge the mind but he will be bolstered by the knowledge he achieved something very special that is never likely to be beaten. Mahut ended up being beaten and all the effort he put in seems in vain. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to suggest this loss could manifest itself in him calling an end to his career.” Spend an intimate evening with eight-time Grand Slam winner and Olympic gold medalist, Andre Agassi, as ESPN Commentator Rick Reilly "Opens" the pages to Agassi's personal life, tennis career, best-selling book and future.

AAKD is Saturday, August 28, from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. In past years, there has been an attendance of over 30,000 people. This year, we fully expect another record-breaking day of interactive games and activities for children and adults, along with the stadium show featuring musical talent and the best tennis players in the world!
Our 550 volunteers play an important role. With at least 13 active courts and grounds full of various activities and events, our volunteers are key to making the day a success. While the courts are staffed with tennis teaching professionals, we need volunteers to help with activities, like monitoring the flow of participants, supervising court safety and assisting with picking up balls and equipment. Volunteers are also responsible for supporting various grounds activities that happen throughout the day, such as distributing hats, conducting surveys, providing directions or assistance and monitoring crowds. Volunteers will receive a lunch stipend, AAKD hat and AAKD shirt. If you're interested in volunteering for the day, you must attend a mandatory orientation at the Grand Hyatt New York in Manhattan on Friday, August 27, at 7 p.m. Assignments, credentials and an AAKD shirt will be available only at this meeting. We do not arrange for alternate pick-up of these items unless you have already been assigned to a volunteer group. Each participant must registrater online and mail us a signed release and consent form. Other important details:

At this year’s tournament IBM has updated its ‘IBM Seer’ mobile application to combine augmented reality with live location-based video streams of some showcourt matches and 'busy areas’ such as the Aorangi Terrace (aka Henman Hill), and the taxi queues. The 2010 Seer app streams live video from on and off the court based on the user’s exact location.
Available for both iPhone and Android, the free to download app offers live geo-tagged information on queue lengths, food and drink stands and other Wimbledon facilities enabling fans to use the quickest routes to strawberries and cream and catch more of the court action, even if they are on the other side of the grounds. Both the Android and iPhone versions feature location-aware visualization technology with the augmented reality application acting as a real-time guide and interactive map of the tournament as well as providing up-to-the-second scores, venue and transport information. The app features more than 90 points of interest ranging from the new shop through to the ATM next to centre court. The Seer applications for Android and iPhone handsets are available by downloading directly from either the iTunes App Store or Android Market. There won’t just be tennis on the mind of Venus Williams during Wimbledon. On June 29th she has a book going on sale. It isn’t about tennis directly, and the title hardly trips off the tongue and sounds more like a Committee report. It’s called ‘Come to Win: Business Leaders, Artists, Doctors, and other Visionaries on How Sports Can Help You Top Your Profession.’ It’s published by Amistad/HarperCollins and sells for $25.99.
Venus co-authored the book with Kelly E. Carter, and it is a collection of thoughts from almost 50 people about the importance of sport to their lives. Among the contributors are former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former General Electric Co. CEO Jack Welch, fashion designer Vera Wang, and former professional athletes such as Magic Johnson, Roger Staubach and Billie Jean King. The book sets out to tell "the story of how good sport can be for people, the lessons you learn from it, and just encouraging people to be involved with sport, especially young people," Williams - who conducted many of the interviews herself - told the Associated Press in a telephone interview. The ITF has announced six of the eight venues for the 2010 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-offs.
